Juanita Aragon Urban Services

I was waiting to see if Aunt Juanita's obituary was going to be posted on the Casper Star Tribune website, but it hasn't happened as of midnight.

From what I have heard, Aunt Juanita's rosary service is going to be Tuesday, September 21, 7pm at Rocky Mountain Hall in Fort Washakie and her funeral service is going to be Wednesday, September 22, 10am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ethete. The wake (if any) is unknown to me at this time.

Note to reader: this is news through the grapevine. To me, it would be more logical if the places were switched because the church is smaller than "Rock" Hall. I will post when I know something more definite.

Juanita Aragon Urban

I saw my Aunt Regina in Mr D's earlier this afternoon. She said that she is getting groceries for her bare cupboards and empty refrigerator.

Knowing that she isn't in the best of health, I asked her how she is doing. She said that she is tired from working and traveling to Casper.

She said Aunt Juanita had a heart attack before Labor Day and was flown to Casper. Juanita has had to have her other leg amputated (because of diabetes).

Juanita had a major heart attack and passed away yesterday.

My condolences go out to my cousins Donna and Doug and their families.

I will post her obituary when I see it.

Mabel S. Aragon, Charles Chris Aragon, and Elaine Veronica Aragon Graves

I gave copies of the death certificates of Mabel S. Aragon, Charles Chris Aragon, and Elaine Veronica Aragon (my Grandma Julia's brother and sisters) to my Uncle Harold. He said that he knows where these three infants are buried.

These three graves are unmarked in the Chief Washakie Cemetery in Fort Washakie, Wyoming, but Uncle Harold knows which grave is which.

While we were discussing these death certificates, my Uncle Preston walked into our discussion and offered to make grave markers for these three.

It's neat to see my genealogy research bring dignity and remembrance to "lost" relatives.

Pierre Mayette or Peter Meyett

After doing research on Margaret "Zap-Pa" Lahoe, I thought I would try to find Pierre Mayette in the 1870 US Census for Sweetwater County, Wyoming Territory.

I found a Peter Meyett in Bryan (I didn't know existed), Wyoming in 1870. I checked Google Maps and found Bryan, WY north of Interstate 80 between Little American and Green River. Bryan, WY even has a 82935 zip code. Wow!

Back to the task at hand.... Peter Meyett in Bryan, WY in 1870 was the age of 37 and had a birth place listed as Canada which his birthdate would be 1833.

Is this the ancestor I've been looking for? The name "Pierre" is the French name for "Peter". The pronunciation of "Meyett" sounds more like the name I have heard growing up.

I Googled "Peter Meyett" and found a "Peter Meyett" buried in Bath National Cemetery, Bath, Steuben County, New York listed as "Meyett, Peter, d. 02/03/1920, Plot: H 12 15, bur. 02/03/1920".

In my Google results, I also found this "Peter Meyett" died at the age of 85, February 3, 1920 in the New York State Soldiers' and Sailors' Home of chronic myocarditis. This "Peter Meyett" served in the company and regiment E, 16 N. Y. Infantry.

Another search result took me to Archives.com. I registered for the free 7-day trial and found that this soldier had served in the Civil War. There was another record for a "Peter Mayett" that was born in the area of Independence (KS?).

Kansas - Canada. It sounds close.

Did the Bryan, Wyoming 1870 Census enumerator hear incorrectly?

Is this the Peter Meyett I'm looking for? Further research may tell.

Eugene E. Meeks, Lahoe Decendent

I input Eugene E. Meeks's obituary information into my Family Tree Maker 2010 family tree. It turns out Eugene is my 2nd cousin 2x removed.

His mother, Alvena Lahoe, is the daughter of Charles Lahoe who is the son of Margaret Lahoe (my third great grandmother) who is also the mother of Juanita (Mayette) Aragon (my second great grandmother).

After looking at other family trees posted online, I discovered that the name "Lahoe" came from Joseph Lahoe or Jose Lajoe Talamenez who came from Spain.

Eugene E. “Pete” Meeks of Ft. Washakie

Eugene E. “Pete” Meeks passed away July 31st at the VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City following a illness. He was 62.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Friday, August 6, at Wind River Lutheran Church, 14695 Highway 287 Fort Washakie, Wyoming 82514 at Ft. Washakie. Viewing at the church will be from 9:00 am – 10:00 am

Viewing will begin at 4:00 pm, Thursday, August 5, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 pm both at family home, 196 Old Wind River Highway. Interment with military honors will be in Sacajawea Cemetery, Ft. Washakie.

Eugene E. Meeks was born April 9, 1948, the son of Alvena Lahoe Meeks and Issac Coando Sr. Growing up he traveled to various places in the western states accompanying his mother. He was baptized in the Christian Faith. They resided in Chandler AZ and he graduated from high school in 1968. Upon graduation he joined the army where he was stationed in Hawaii & Japan, during the Vietnam War. He married his first wife Noriko, while being stationed in Japan. They later divorced.

After being honorable discharged in 1972 from the army and he returned to Chandler AZ. He attended Lamson Business College and received his AA degree. He also received his BA degree in Science at National College of Business in Phoenix AZ.

In 1977, he returned to Ft. Washakie and married Nadine Schoenthal May 24, 1979, together they had three children, Jedadiah, Erica, and Shiloh.

He worked as a manager at Chief Washakie plunge, a janitor at CWC in Riverton, along with a math tutor at Wyoming Indian High School in 1983. He worked for Dynojet, Wind River Environment Quality and Shoshone Utilities. In 1999 he again worked as a tutor for Wyoming Indian High School, which he truly enjoyed helping the kids with math and being there for him. For 27 yrs he was a true Chief fan whether it was listening to them on the radio or attending as many state basketball games as possible.

He enjoyed going to the mountains collecting rocks and finding new walking sticks. He loved fishing and spending time with his six grandchildren. His passion/ talent was Cartooning, carving wood, and drawing. His favorite shows were forensic files, first 48, CSI, and Sopranos. He really enjoyed spending time riding quads and going to the mountains with his family. He enjoyed shooting guns, camping and fishing with his best friend David Murphy. In January he attended his first live Bronco game with David.

He is survived by his wife of 34 yrs, Nadine; Jedadiah and wife Cody Meeks of Riverton, Erica Meeks of Casper, Shiloh Stevens-Plascencia and husband Juan Stevens-Plascencia of Ft. Washakie. Brothers Edmund and wife Kay Meeks of Ft. Washakie, and Richard Coando of Johnstown. Sisters; Lois Robbins of Amity Oregon, Marie Wadda and husband Lyle Wadda of Ft. Washakie, Lora Harris of Ft. Washakie, Melvera Mitchell of Ft. Washakie, and Avis Nash of Casper. Grandchildren Taj Tillman of Casper, Leona Meeks-Lindgren of Big Piney, Nathen Meeks of Riverton, Joaquin Stevens-Plascencia of Ft. Washakie, Nuvia Cuartas of Casper, and Anexi Stevens-Plascencia of Ft. Washakie. Numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brothers and sister.

The family requests that any donations can be made to” Video’s for Vets”, Please send anything G or PG rated. (Will be collected and sent to both V.A hospitals by family.)

Where is Jesus Aragon in 1910?

I looked at my great-great-grandmother Juanita (Mayette) Aragon entry in the 1910 Census.  It says she is widowed.  Technically she was from her first husband, James Washakie (I think).  Or is this referring to Jesus Aragon as well?

The news article from the Wyoming State Journal in March 1913 has Jesus Aragon dying in February 1913 as is the date on his grave marker.

As I was thinking at the place where I do some thinking, maybe I need to research Jesus Aragon under DiAragon, Jesus.

Researched at the Wyoming State Archives in Cheyenne, WY with the intent of finding a death certificate for my great-great-grandfather, Jesus Aragon.

Looked in the name index--not listed under Aragon.  Looked for Arragon, D'Aragon, D'Arragon, DeAragon, DeArragon--nothing.

It's like he didn't exist--definitely a brick wall in my genealogy research.

Found Charles Aragon, Charles Chris Aragon, Elaine Veronica Aragon, Mabel S. Aragon, and William Aragon.  All of these names I recognized in my family tree except Elaine Veronica--this was a new name to me.  I almost didn't pursue it--glad I did though.  Elaine Veronica turned out to be an infant sister of my Grandmother Julia that wasn't in my family tree research or in online family trees.
